About us
The members of Diamantveld Region of Honorary Rangers are mainly based in the Kimberley area of the Northern Cape, and operate in the newly proclaimed Mokala National Park. The vibrant Ranger Corps consists of 12 HR’s and 6 Applicants ably led by Chairperson Dudley van Rensburg and vice chair Adolf Lloyd-Townsend. The other member of the Regional Management Committee is Sakkie van der Westhuizen.
“Given the fact that this is a brand new park we are really excited about the contribution we as Honorary Rangers can make to SANParks and to Mokala helping it become a top tourist and conservation attraction in the region.” Commented Chairperson Dudley van Rensburg. “One of the exciting projects on the go at present is a birding day which will be held during September”
Members of the public who would like to take part can contact Dudley van Rensburg on 083 3018390.
Mokala, the Setswana word for Camel Thorn (Kameeldoring) is the latest National Park to be proclaimed and is approximately 80 km south-west of Kimberley. The park is made up of a variety of Koppieveld and large open plains.
Once visitors drive through the Dolerite hills that form the boundary of the park they find themselves in large sandy plains towards the North and the West of the park where the landscape is dominated by Camel Thorn which is the major tree species in the park. This important species has a great range over the the Northern Cape and varies from small spiny scrubs to 16m tall trees.
These trees support an incredible array of wildlife in the park and have helped animals and humans to survive in this arid environment for thousands of years. Besides many indigenous plant and bird species the park supports viable populations of Black and White Rhino, Tsessebe, Roan Antelope and Black Wildebeest. A disease free buffalo project is also on the go in the park.
